About the procedure
What is phlebology?
Phlebology is a highly specialized field of medicine that focuses on the comprehensive diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases of the venous system and the blood vessels of the lower extremities. In modern medical practice, phlebology plays a key role in maintaining vascular health and improving patients’ quality of life.
People most often consult a phlebologist (vascular surgeon) for varicose veins, spider veins, a constant feeling of heaviness and fatigue in the legs, swelling of the calves and feet, nighttime cramps, pain when walking, or visible enlarged veins. These symptoms may indicate impaired venous blood flow and require professional evaluation.
Sclerotherapy — an effective solution for vascular problems
Sclerotherapy is a modern, minimally invasive procedure that effectively removes spider veins, telangiectasias, and small varicose veins without surgery. The method involves injecting a special sclerosing agent directly into the lumen of the blood vessel.
Using a fine needle, the doctor injects a special solution (sclerosant) into the affected vein, causing the vein walls to “stick together” and gradually dissolve. Over time, the treated vein becomes virtually invisible, and blood flow is naturally redirected to healthy veins.
When is sclerotherapy most often recommended?
Spider veins and reticular veins
Telangiectasia refers to dilated small blood vessels that appear red or bluish and manifest on the skin’s surface as characteristic patterns, spider veins, or star-shaped marks, most commonly on the legs, thighs, or ankles.
Reticular veins
Small, dilated subcutaneous veins that are blue-green in color and 2–3 mm in diameter, which are visually unsightly and may be accompanied by a sensation of heaviness.
Aesthetic discomfort
Localized vascular symptoms that undermine self-confidence, make it difficult to wear revealing clothing, and cause psychological discomfort when the legs are exposed.
The process
How is the sclerotherapy procedure performed?
The procedure takes an average of 20–40 minutes, depending on the treatment area and the extent of the work. The specific treatment plan and the required number of sclerosant ampoules are determined by the doctor on an individual basis during the initial consultation. In some cases, a course of several consecutive visits spaced 2–4 weeks apart is required to achieve optimal results.
Preparation and Inspection
The doctor performs a visual examination of the problem areas, determines the scope of treatment, and develops a personalized treatment plan
Area treatment
The skin in the treatment area is treated with an antiseptic solution to ensure sterility
Administration of a sclerosing agent
Using a fine needle, the doctor injects the medication directly into the lumen of the blood vessel under ultrasound guidance
Compression
After the procedure, a compression bandage is applied to the treated area to ensure optimal results
Recommendations after sclerotherapy
Important: All recommendations are tailored to your individual needs and will be discussed with your doctor during your appointment, taking into account the specifics of your case, the extent of the procedure performed, and your overall health.
Compression knitwear
Your doctor will recommend wearing special compression stockings or knee-highs for a certain period of time to improve the results and speed up healing.
Brisk walking
A daily walk of 30–60 minutes is recommended to maintain normal blood circulation and prevent fluid retention.
Time limits
You should avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, tanning beds, and strenuous physical activity for 2–4 weeks after the procedure.
